The Guns Above (Signal Airship, Book 1)

“This military steampunky fantasy debut, filled with quick action, witty dialog, and appealing characters, will bring joy to fans of Naomi Novik’s ‘Temeraire’ series.”
Library Journal | ★ | Starred Review
“An exciting new world that will attract steampunk fans of all ages and leave them hoping for more.”
Booklist
“Bennis writes a pleasing mix of banter and gritty battle scenes, combining both the adrenaline rush of combat and its horrifying results, and never indulging in too-sudden social victories that might cheapen the long struggle against embedded prejudice.”

Why you should read The Guns Above, at Shepherd.com
They say it’s not the fall that kills you.
For Josette Dupre, Garnia’s first female airship captain, it might just be a bullet in the back. On top of patrolling the front lines, she must also contend with a crew who doubts her expertise, a new airship that’s an untested deathtrap, and the foppish aristocrat Lord Bernat, a gambler and shameless flirt with the military know-how of a thimble.
When the enemy makes an unprecedented move that could turn the tide of the war, Josette must deal with Bernat, rally her crew, and survive long enough to prove herself.
By Fire Above (Signal Airship, Book 2)

“…the details, turn of events, and character interactions are something you need to experience for yourself.”
Elitist Book Reviews
“Bennis opens and closes with fierce combat sequences and layers in knotty questions about how to distinguish between loyalty and romance from love, and balance obedience to superiors with duty to subordinates, all starkly highlighted by life-or-death decisions forced on the characters. Readers will hear both the crackle of musket fire and the heartfelt cries of honest self-admission in this rich adventure.”
Publishers Weekly
“Like The Guns Above, By Fire Above shines with its voice and sense of humour—gallows humour, mostly, blackly glittering.
This is a fast, fun novel. But though deeply entertaining and with swashbuckling flair, By Fire Above doesn’t neglect the dark side of military service, either. It’s well worth reading, and I look forward to seeing much more of Bennis’s work in years to come.”

She’s braved bullets and bayonets through years of war, but is Josette Dupre ready for the unfathomable horror of a formal ball?
With Bernat at her side, she might just survive, but only if he can set aside the long-running feud with his suave and sexy older brother, Roland.
Between noble scheming, under-trained recruits, and supply shortages, Josette and the crew of the Mistral figure out a way to return to Durum―only to discover that when the homefront turns into the frontlines, things are more dangerous than they seem.

“The sensibility of the characters … reminds me of the characters in The Good Place… The Devil’s Guide is droll, funny, and, at turns, painfully true.”
Paul Weimer, The Skiffy and Fanty Show
“Say the devil, in the form of a talkative woman with zero respect for your boundaries (because, y’know, devil) follows you home from a business trip and starts rifling through your purse looking for spare tampons? And won’t frikking leave. Awkward, yes. Likely damning. In the hands of Robyn Bennis, it becomes concept-gold. Hilarious throughout yet never overdone, achingly honest at times, this independently-published offering from the author of The Signal Airship series, might have slipped under most folks’ radars, which is a shame. Bennis takes us on a totally believable romp with Satan in this slim novel.”

I met the devil at a Motel 6, poolside.
It’s hell making friends. For Jordan Liang, the sentiment can be taken literally. The devil followed her home, and has now decided to keep her. Jordan must live with a houseguest who complains constantly, eats all her pudding, and can incinerate her in a pillar of hellfire.
A darkly whimsical novel for fans of Christopher Moore and Terry Pratchett.
